Massachusetts General Hospital has some of the most talented doctors in the world and is also fortunate enough to have some of the most generous donors. Finding ways to greatly improve treatment of our patients is an essential part of our mission. As part of the $1.5 billion dollar Campaign for the Third Century, enhancing medical education has been identified as one of five areas in need of critical funding. With the goal of raising $50 million for this initiative, a portion of these funds will be allocated to ongoing educational programs.

To disseminate and improve the standard of care especially in a time of healthcare redesign, the MGH Psychiatry Academy was formed in 2005. Following up on its success, the MGH Academy was formed in 2008. Donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations to the MGH Psychiatry Academy and the MGH Academy have supported a variety of remarkable education programs. Among them:

HEALTHCARE PROVIDER EDUCATION: Professionals, who value the highest standards of clinical care, can participate in the MGH Academy’s provider education programs that use an innovative program design of live and mobile electronic platforms that allow participants the opportunity to translate newly acquired skills into practice. Today, the MGH Academy and Psychiatry Academy combined operate the largest department-based education program at MGH reaching 25,000 healthcare professionals, 10,000 patients and their loved ones and includes a membership that spans 121 countries around the globe. The MGH Academy disseminates more than 100,000 learning activities per year that touch on an array of provider competencies and day-to-day clinical challenges. These programs are made possible by generous donations from foundations and commercial entities.

PATIENT EDUCATION: With continued support from the Sidney R. Baer, Jr. Foundation for the MGH Psychiatry Academy and the Mood and Disorders Resource Center, the Department has been able to advance the its mission to improve the quality of psychiatric care through innovative and public education. So far, 18 programs, presented free-of-charge, have benefitted approximately 3,500 patients and their loved ones. Priority has been given to topics focusing on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar and depressive disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, as well as complementary and alternative medicine. These patient centered programs ultimately lead to better lives for patients, their loved ones, and caregivers. With additional philanthropic support, the MGH Academy will be able to expand its reach beyond psychiatry and into other diagnostic categories, such as cancer and cardiology.

HOME BASE PROGRAM:  Matching gifts from the Red Sox Foundation and MGH created the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program. Its mission is to provide care to veterans with deployment and combat-related stress disorders and traumatic brain injury. With this generous philanthropic support, the MGH Psychiatry Academy was able to develop an education program on PTSD and TBI for providers and veterans of OEF/OIF and a program tailored to the specific educational needs of clergy who are often first responders to veterans and their families with PTSD and TBI.

The Lunder-Dineen Health Education Alliance of Maine: A gift from the Lunder Family of Maine to the Massachusetts General Hospital designed create and disseminate educational offerings that might be of value to residents and health-care practitioners living in Maine.
