Patients with major depression commonly suffer from co-morbid anxiety. Compared to depressed patients without anxiety, patients with depression and comorbid anxiety symptoms are likely to have an earlier age of depression onset, poorer response to antidepressants, a more chronic course, more psychosocial impairment and increased suicidality. In this clinical simulation, providers will meet with a patient who was started on an SSRI by her primary care provider for management of her depression. Despite her symptoms, the patient insists that she is fine and that there is nothing to worry about. The provider must demonstrate competency in assessing and treating the patient's symptoms during this clinical encounter.
