Description
Pain is the most common reason why patients seek medical attention and affects 25% to 30% of all Americans. Chronic pain is a multifactorial condition that manifests both physical and psychological symptoms, including anxiety and depression, reduced mobility, and sleep and appetite disturbances. Chronic pain and depression are frequently comorbid processes, each having detrimental effects of the severity, duration, and treatment responsiveness of the other. Therefore, investigation of depression and other conditions that are comorbid with chronic pain is important for comprehensive care. This educational program will focus on the relationship of chronic pain to affective states, appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies, and the role of physical medicine and rehabilitation treatment.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the relationship between chronic pain and depression and the implications for evaluation and effective treatment of chronic pain.
- Develop a structured approach to selecting appropriate pharmacologic therapy for chronic pain based on an understanding of its pathophysiology.
- Recognize the role of physical medicine and rehabilitation treatment strategies in the management of chronic pain.
