Description

An evolving paradigm in the psychiatric field is that alleviation of depression is no longer viewed simply as amelioration of depressive symptoms. Rather, there is a growing emphasis on achieving full remission, defined as the complete absence of symptoms and improved psychosocial and occupational functioning. There is evidence that cognitive impairment caused by depression is associated with reduced treatment response and poor social and vocational functioning. Improved cognitive functioning is, therefore, a necessary condition for full functional recovery. This learning program will teach participants to assess cognitive function in depressed patients, and be aware of factors, such as antidepressant side effects, that may be barriers to cognitive recovery.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the factors that constitute barriers to full functional recovery from depression including medication side effect management, cognitive impairment and optimal multimodal therapy strategies.
  • Review the indications and efficacy of available pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic treatment options for depression.
