Biography

Dr. Oliver Freudenreich is a staff psychiatrist in the Massachusetts General Hospital Schizophrenia Program where he directs the MGH First-Episode And Early Psychosis Program.  He is also the director of the Infectious Disease Consultation Service in the Division of Psychiatry and Medicine at MGH.  He is an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and a clinical instructor at Boston University Medical School.

Dr. Freudenreich received his medical degree from the University of Heidelberg in Germany.  He completed his psychiatric residency at UMDNJ (formerly Rutgers) in New Jersey.  Additional training included a 2-year fellowship at Duke University in psychiatric research and a 1-year fellowship at MGH in consultation psychiatry.  The Duke fellowship exposed him to clinical trials methodology as well as sophisticated psychopharmacology of schizophrenia. For his involvement in research and teaching, he has received fellowships from the Society of Biological Psychiatry, from the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine, and the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training.

Dr. Freudenreich works as an attending psychiatrist and resident supervisor in the MGH Schizophrenia Program at the Freedom Trail Clinic, and he is the Director of the First-Episode and Early Psychosis Program (FEPP) at the MGH. His academic interest is in the area of optimal psychopharmacological treatment for schizophrenia, including refractory psychosis, the role of medical morbidity in schizophrenia, and treatment adherence. In addition to his expertise in schizophrenia, Dr. Freudenreich provides psychiatric consultations and treatment for medically complex patients of the MGH Infectious Disease Clinic.
